Preparing for the Moving Day

  • Confirm the Details:
    • Ensure you and the moving team agree on the time and date of your move.
  • Declutter:
    • Get rid of items you don’t need at your new place.
    • Dispose of flammable goods like paint and kerosene – we cannot transport these.
    • Label hazardous materials for the new occupants if needed.
  • Gas Cylinders:
    • Have your gas cylinders emptied at your local service station before the move.
  • Disconnect Electronics:
    • Dismantle and disconnect wide-screen TVs (professional help may be required).
    • Bundle and label all cords, cables, and plugs in a box for easy reassembly.
    • Take a photo of the back of your stereo and TV so you know how to reconnect everything.
  • Important Documents & Valuables:
    • Set aside a box for important personal documents and keep them with you during the move.
    • Keep jewelry and small valuables together, and carry them with you.

In the Days Leading Up to Your Move

  • Defrost the Freezer
    • This will prevent water damage and reduce the weight of the unit.
  • Drain Fuel Tanks
    • For petrol-powered garden tools (e.g., mowers, chainsaws), drain the fuel tanks.
  • Set Aside Non-Moving Items
    • Identify and set aside items that will not be moved.
  • Empty Rubbish Bins
    • Make sure all bins are cleared before moving day.
  • Disconnect Washing Machine
    • Shut off water inlets and ensure the washing machine is properly drained.

If Your Items Are Going into Storage

  • Remove Food
    • Food can spoil in storage, so be sure to remove it before moving.
  • Dangerous Goods:
    • Do not store flammable liquids such as paint, kerosene, aerosols, and gas cylinders – these are classified as dangerous goods.
  • Pack Breakables Separately:
    • Remove fragile items like mirrors, perfume bottles, and glassware from drawers, and pack them carefully.
  • Check for Unwanted Items
    • Ensure that no unwanted or unnecessary items are being packed.

On the Big Day

  • Fridge and Freezer:
    • If moving locally, empty and wrap the fridge and freezer contents in a blanket to insulate them during transport.
  • Final Check:
    • Do a final walk-through of your old home to ensure nothing is left behind. Confirm that all your items are loaded onto the truck.
    • Check that everything arrives safely at the new location.
