Moving to a new home or flat? With so many details to keep track of, it’s easy to overlook important tasks. Use this handy checklist to stay organised and ensure a hassle-free move.
Services to Update, Redirect or Cancel
– Mail & Subscriptions – Redirect your newspaper and New Zealand Post mail.
– Utilities & Providers – Notify your phone, broadband, and Sky TV providers.
– Gas & Power – Arrange a final meter reading and update your address.
– Water Supply – If on a rural supply, update your details with the provider.
Notify These Organisations About Your Address Change
– Bank – If changing branches, update your details.
– Insurance Providers – Health, life, home, car, and other insurance policies that will need updating.
– Electoral Roll – Update your voter registration.
– School & Daycare – Notify them of the move to update listed address or if your children are transferring.
– Local Council – Update your address for rates and services.
– Veterinarian – Ensure your pet’s details are up to date.
Getting Ready for Moving Day
– Confirm Moving Details – Ensure you and the moving team agree on the time and date of your move.
– Declutter & Dispose – Donate or discard unnecessary items before packing.
– Hazardous Items – Dispose of flammable goods like paint and kerosene (we cannot transport these). Label hazardous materials for the new occupants if needed.
– Electronics & Appliances – Disconnect large appliances and label cords for easy setup. Snap a picture of cable setups for TVs and stereos to make reassembly easier.
Final Preparations Before Moving
– Defrost the Freezer – Prevent leaks, water damage and reduce the weight.
– Drain Fuel Tanks and Gas Cylinders – Empty petrol from garden tools like mowers and chainsaws and have your gas cylinders emptied at your local service station before the move.
– Set Aside Non-Moving Items – Identify and set aside items that will not be moved.
– Empty Rubbish Bins – Make sure all bins are emptied before moving day.
– Disconnect Washing Machine – Turn off water inlets and drain excess water.
If Your Items Are Going into Storage
– Remove Food – Prevent spoilage, waste and unwanted odours.
– Avoid Storing Hazardous Materials – Do not store dangerous goods such as paint, kerosene, aerosols, or gas cylinders.
– Pack Breakables Separately – Remove fragile items from drawers like perfume bottles, glassware and mirrors and pack them carefully.
– Check for Unwanted Items – Ensure all unwanted or unnecessary items aren’t being packed
Moving Day Checklist
– Fridge & Freezer – If moving locally, pack food in an insulated bag or to keep it cool.
– Final Walkthrough – Check every room, cupboard, and storage space before leaving.
– Inventory Check – Ensure all your belongings are loaded onto the truck and arrive safely at the new location.
